Pierre Vigney's Le Canne
EDAS studies Cane fighting arts. We have had a quick look at Cunningham's Art but are focusing on the Frenchman Pierre Vigney's Le Canne as instructed at the Bartitsu Club 1899-1902. The canes used in Vigney's Le Canne were much lighter thinner canes then the traditional British ones. Vigney's Le Canne was created and taught as a method of self defence from the roving gangs of France. His cane style relied on quick rolling and flicking strikes to incapacitate and disable an attacker. The basic stances used in the Cane component mirror those used in the Savate and Boxing parts. While the basics of Le Canne are simple they progress to deal with more complex and dangerous situations. Cunninghams Cunningham's Cane Art (1911?)was more modern and suited a thicker cane and again was designed for self defence. Like Le Canne the basics are simple but those more experienced would stand good chance of surviving encounters with multiple opponents and more dangerous situations. Indian Police Cane Manual The 1922(?) l Indian Police Cane manual utilises a thinner longer and far more flexible cane. This Cane Art was designed for use subduing criminals and putting down civil disobedience. |
